My Top 5 Movies from 2014

So, there’s been a lot of hits and misses this past year for Hollywood. Apparently it’s been one of the worst for Hollywood, which I find a little hard to believe because there’s been some pretty big releases like Guardians of the Galaxy, The Hunger Games and X-Men, but maybe there wasn’t as many as in past years.

Regardless, I feel it’s time to give the list of my top 5 favorite films of 2014, as well as honorable mentions and films that I still need to see, and maybe a few that I’m looking forward to in 2015.

Coming in at #5, a movie that I felt was a great sequel to an awesome prequel, haha, confusing, but Dawn of the Planet of the Apes was one of my favorites from 2014. It was exciting, thrilling, unpredictable, and it had me on the edge of my seat.

#4 is a movie that caught people off guard I think, at least it did for me, I didn’t expect it to be as good as it was, I honestly didn’t really know what to expect at all, Guardians of the Galaxy. It blended comedy, action, aliens, sci fi and super heroes all into one, and Chris Pratt was awesome in it.

Now for the top 3!

interstellar4#3 This movie had a lot of mixed reviews, some people loved it, others hated it. Well, I really like Interstellar a lot, I had been anticipating it all year and I think Christopher Nolan did an awesome job, even if it was super long and had lots of plot holes.

edge of tomorrowComing in it at #2, another surprise movie, didn’t really know what to expect, but loved it, Edge of Tomorrow. It was well acted, the action was awesome, and the plot kept me going the whole time. I thought it was great, and loved every minute of it!

And finally, my favorite movie of the whole year! The Grand Budapest Hotel!

I loved it, it was hilarious, definitely had Wes Anderson written all over it, but at the same time it was different from all of his previous works. I loved the cast, the story, the acting, and the surprise guest starring of his old collaborators. I still loved it despite cringing every time Jeff Goldblum gets his fingers sliced off, did not see that coming! And it’s only appropriate that last night at the Golden Globes Award Ceremony that The Grand Budapest Hotel won for best comedy or musical, nice! That’s Wes Anderson’s first win for a Golden Globe!

If you want to read more about each of these movies, along with my reviews of them, look at my reviews section on this site.

Now for the honorable mentions, as well as my least favorite from this year:

X-Men: Days of Future Past  Also a great movie, just not top 5 great I guess

Lego Movie Also a good one

Fury A great movie, loved this one, but also not top 5 love

Big Hero 6 Well done, but no

Dumb and Dumber To Obviously won’t win any awards or top favorites, but still surprisingly funny

And for my least favorite film of 2014, out of what I’ve seen,

Monuments Men It was such a bummer, the cast was awesome, John Goodman, Bill Murray, George Clooney, Matt Damon, and Bob Balaban, among others. I wanted it to be good, but it was just kind of boring, the jokes didn’t land that well and it wasn’t as interesting as it should have been, I’m not even sure why. So that was a disappointment, I didn’t hate it or anything, just didn’t like it that much.

And now, for the movies that I still haven’t seen yet that might possibly change my top 5 list!

American Sniper – Looks great

Birdman – Just won for best screenplay

Boyhood – Just won for best film

Chef – Heard it was good

Exodus – I don’t know why

Foxcatcher – I still don’t know how I haven’t seen this yet

Gone Girl – Heard it was great

Nightcrawler – Also heard it was great

Selma – It’s my duty as a citizen to see this

St. Vincent – I love everything that Bill Murray is in, except Monuments Men

The Theory of Everything – Won best actor

Transcendence – I don’t know why

Unbroken – The book and the man were awesome, even if the movie isn’t very good

Wild – Heard Reese Witherspoon was great in it

And for the movies that I’m excited about for 2015:

Blackhat – January 16th

Project Almanac – January 30th, could be really bad, or could be kinda cool

Jupiter Ascending – February 6th

Kingsman: The Secret Service – February 13th, getting good reviews so far

Chappie – March 6th, about a robot with artificial intelligence, could be good or really cheesy

Get Hard – March 27th, You had me at Will Ferrell

The Avengers: Age of Ultron – May 1st, this is gonna be a big one

Jurassic World Obviously, June 12th, you know that date’s in my calendar already

Inside Out – June 19th, Pixar, you’ve done it again! Is probably what I’ll be saying on June 20th…

Terminator Genisys – July 1st, based on the spelling, probably not going to be that great…

Ant-Man – July 17th, Paul Rudd as a super hero? I don’t know about this one guys…

Pan – July 24th, a rip off of Hook?

Spectre – November 6th, the next James Bond film, how can it not be good?

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 – This is gonna be a big one too, November 20th

Star Wars VII Obviously, December 18th, a long time from now

So look forward to any news, updates or reviews that I’ll post about any of these movies, excited for a new year and a new year of movies!
